FAQ:
Q: Can singles adopt?
A: Yes! Some countries do allow single parents to adopt successfully. We will help to lead you in the direction of the country that is right for you. Within the U.S., single can adopt successfully either through a private adoption of a newborn or through a public adoption from the U.S. foster care system. Singles should be encouraged, because there are options for you!
Q: How old are the children when they come home?
A: Children adopted privately within the United States are usually newborns and young infants. Children adopted internationally can range from older infants to adolescents, depending on the adoptive parent’s age and specific country requirements. Children within the U.S. foster care system are usually over the age of 5 years, and there are sibling groups available.
Q: Can I choose the gender of the child?
A: Some countries and placing agencies do allow you to specify the gender of your child, but some ask that you remain open to either a boy or a girl. In a domestic adoption situation, specifying the gender of an unborn child gets a little tricky and will likely increase the waiting time of the potential adopting parents.
Q: How can I be certain of the health of a child?
A: You cannot be certain of this with any country you choose in an international adoption. There are always risks, but we seek to help you understand those risks. With a newborn adoption within the U.S., there is usually a great deal of information available about the birth parents' health as well as the health of the fetus throughout the pregnancy.
Q: Am I too old to adopt?
A: Our agency does not place age restrictions on parents. However, we do follow the rules of each country. There is more flexibility on the age of the parent when one is considering an adoption of a child from the U.S. foster care system.
Partnerships:
For International Adoptions:
Children's Home Society & Family Services (website: www.chsfs.org)
The Children’s Home Society has helped build families through adoption since 1889, and has placed over 23,000 children with families throughout the United States. The agency is located in St. Paul, Minnesota, but places children all over the U.S. Their international program coordinators specialize in adoptions from a particular country, and each has knowledge of the language and culture of that country. Children’s Home Society partners with different home-study agencies in each state to provide home-study and post-placement services, while Children’s Home Society acts directly as the placing agency of the child from a particular country. They work with the following countries: Korea, China, India, Colombia, Ethiopia, Russia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Honduras.
Children’s Home Society also has an active “Waiting Children” program for many of these countries. These children generally have known medical or developmental issues, are older children or are part of a biologically related sibling group. Children’s Home Society has a strong commitment to finding families for these children, and there are sometimes shorter wait times, flexibility on requirements, grants and fee reductions for some of the waiting children.
