FAQ:

Sitting on shouldersQ: Can singles adopt?
A: Yes! Some countries do allow single parents to adopt successfully. We will help to lead you in the direction of the country that is right for you.

Q: How old are the children when they come home?
A: Children adopted privately within the United States are usually newborns and young infants. Children adopted internationally can range from infants to older children, depending on the adoptive parent’s age and specific country requirements.

Q: Can I choose the gender of the child?
A: Some countries and placing agencies do allow you to specify the gender of your child, but some ask that you remain open to either a boy or a girl.

Q: How can I be certain of the health of a child?
A: You cannot be certain of this with any country you choose in an international adoption. There are always risks, but we seek to help you understand those risks.

Q: Am I too old to adopt?
A: Our agency does not place age restrictions on parents. However, we do follow the rules of each country.

Partnerships:

MAPS Partnership
We are pleased to announce that Rainbow Adoptions International Inc. has a new partnership with MAPS Adoptions and Humanitarian Aid, based in Portland, Maine. MAPS has had a firm commitment to providing support through humanitarian aid projects for children and families in other countries since 1977. MAPS has placed over 4,000 children with loving, permanent families. Rainbow Adoptions International Inc. is proud to be affiliated with MAPS! The current international programs available through MAPS are in:

  • China
  • Russia
  • India
  • Kazakhstan
  • Peru
  • Guatemala

Adoptive families who live in Connecticut will use Rainbow Adoptions International Inc. to complete a state-required home study, and will use MAPS as the placing agency for the international part of the adoption. By working together, we can guide families through the entire adoption process, from the initial application to the adoption itself, and through post-adoption services. Rainbow Adoptions International Inc. and MAPS will be offering free informational sessions throughout the year, which will explain the international adoption process and offer more country-specific details.

Children's Home Society & Family Services Partnership
Having funThe Children’s Home Society has helped build families through adoption since 1889, and has placed over 23,000 children with families throughout the United States. The agency is located in St. Paul, Minnesota, but places children all over the U.S. Their international program coordinators specialize in adoptions from a particular country, and each has knowledge of the language and culture of that country. Children’s Home Society partners with different home-study agencies in each state to provide home-study and post-placement services, while Children’s Home Society acts directly as the placing agency of the child from a particular country.

Children’s Home Society currently works with the following countries:

  • Korea
  • China
  • Vietnam
  • Thailand
  • India
  • Colombia
  • Ethiopia
  • Guatemala
  • Russia
  • Kazakhstan
  • Uzbekistan
  • Ukraine

Children’s Home Society also has an active “Waiting Children” program for many of these countries. These children generally have known medical or developmental issues, are older children or are part of a biologically related sibling group. Children’s Home Society has a strong commitment to finding families for these children, and there are sometimes shorter wait times, flexibility on requirements, grants and fee reductions for some of the waiting children.
